L'Escapade Island Resort Noumea, New Caledonia

Located on New Caledonia’s Ilot Maitre island in the lagoon of Noumea, L'Escapade Island Resort is the closest overwater bungalow resort to Australia, just a short three-hour flight to Sydney. Formerly known as Coral Palms Island Resort, this private island resort is not as fancy or glamorous as overwater bungalows in Tahiti or the Maldives, but it has the added bonus of being open to day trippers from Noumea, so it’s perfect for a quick visit if you’re in the area.

L'Escapade Island Resort Noumea, New Caledonia

The resort features 25 overwater bungalows complete with outdoor terraces and stairs that lead directly into lagoon. King sized beds and a separate living room make the bungalows spacious, unlike a cramped hotel room. The resort also has 44 land-based bungalows, a mix of island and garden bungalows. All bungalows are air conditioned and the rate includes a full buffet breakfast. WiFi is available, but can be spotty.

Ilot Maitre island is small - you can walk around it in about 30 minutes - but the real appeal here is Noumea Lagoon. Water-based activities are abundant, from snorkeling and scuba diving to kayaks and pedal boats, and you can expect to see sea turtles, reef sharks and tuna in the area. The resort also has a swimming pool if you prefer to swim sans sea creatures. Boat tours, jet ski, wake board, and Hobie Cat rentals are also available.

Ouen Toro Restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining and serves local and international cuisine. Enjoy poolside cocktails at L’Escapade Bar, the resort’s swim-up bar.
