Vahine Island Resort
Located on Motu Tu Vahine (Island of the Woman) a 23-acre private island in Tahiti’s Tahaa lagoon, Vahine Island resort is a nine-room luxury resort that takes barefoot Polynesian luxury to a whole new level. Just three of the nine rooms are overwater bungalows so Vahine is truly a small hotel experience with no nightlife. Unless of course you count watching and feeding the fish through the aquarium table in your overwater bungalow. It’s light for night viewing and we suggest a bottle of wine. For you, not the fish.
The island itself has all the requisite ingredients of a Tahitian paradise: white sand beaches, a coconut grove, a fish-laden coral garden and sunset views of Bora Bora. All this makes it the ideal spot for rest, relaxation, and reconnecting with a loved one. Snorkel, sleep in a hammock, repeat is the recipe for a perfect day at Vahine. The service is top notch without being stuffy and with just nine rooms it’s often easy to feel like you’re the only people on the island.
Due to Vahine’s somewhat remote location, a half board meal plan is required, which means breakfast and dinner are part of your package. There’s just one restaurant at the resort, but the French chef has trained with Michelin-starred chefs and has experience in a variety of cuisines. Enjoy an American-style breakfast, lunch on the beach (served by floral print-clad hostesses) and candlelit dinners with a mix of Polynesian and Mediterranean flavors.
If you want to explore take a Polynesian pirogue (boat) and paddle your way around the lagoon. Learn to windsurf or cruise around on a stand-up paddleboard. Snorkel with an abundance of stingrays, eagle rays, and small black tip reef sharks or fish for some of the other local species. The Beach Boys can help arrange all that and more, including a naturalist tour of the island and coconut weaving lessons.
If you want to learn more about the region — and do some shopping — book a tour of a local Pearl Farm tour or Vanilla Plantation. Or opt for the ultimate indulgence and have a spa treatment on the deck of your bungalow. Or on the beach. Or in the coconut grove. We suggest trying one in each location. Purely for research purposes, of course. Local Monoi and Tamanu oils are used for massages and the treatments will leave you feeling like Polynesian royalty.
The entire island is available to rent — remember it’s only nine rooms — making it perfect for an intimate wedding or small family reunion. We promise that your annoying family member will seem considerably less annoying in this Polynesian paradise.
