Soneva Jani Resort

Opened in 2017, Soneva Jani has one, two, three, and four-bedroom overwater bungalow villas, many with waterslides into the ocean, and one four-bedroom land villa. Each villa comes with its own Mr. or Mrs. Friday, your personal butler who can attend to your needs from arranging a full moon dinner to creating a castaway picnic on one of the deserted islands in the lagoon.

But let’s face it, you probably won’t want to leave your villa. Spend your days lounging in the net over your plunge pool, dangling your feet into the water with a good book or climb the stairs to the second level of your villa and plunge into the waterslide into the clear blue ocean below. There’s an outdoor shower and bathtub – both plenty private – and perhaps one of the most unique features of any overwater bungalow, a retractable roof. A spot directly over the bed slides back at the touch of a button, allowing you to see the stars above. And thanks to incredibly low light pollution, the Maldives is one of the best places in the world to see the night sky.

But if you must leave your villa, hop on a resort provided bicycle and explore the gardens and labyrinth or the spa. Or enjoy a sunset dolphin cruise or a snorkeling excursion on the Noonu Atoll.

Another not-to-be-missed activity is Cinema Paradiso, the Maldives’ only overwater cinema. Don headphones so as not to disturb the wildlife and climb into overwater nets with fresh popped popcorn to enjoy a recent flick.

Start your day at So Fresh with a beautiful buffet and live cooking stations. The Gathering Bar is a day into night space decked out with daybeds and overwater catamaran nets and serving up a selection of cocktails and tapas.  Enjoy evening tastings at So Imaginative where wine pairings accompany the resort’s experimental tastings. Cap off your meal at So Cool, the resort’s complimentary ice cream and chocolate room.

Thursday evenings a pop-up dinner of local Maldivian delicacies is served on North Island at Zuhair’s Island. Or enjoy dinner aside a giant telescope and the resort’s astronomer at So Starstruck where you can learn more about what you see when you peek through that retractable roof.

In-villa dining, private beach dinners and picnics can be arranged and monthly full moon dinners the sandbar of Baraveli Beach are an event truly worth planning your trip around.
